Calming and cleansing, White Sage is traditionally used to make smudge sticks for ceremonial purposes and is widely used as a soapless shampoo and conditioning rinse by Southern California Indians. Its overwhelming popularity in popular culture is threatening its sustainability. At Birdsong Apothecary we only use White Sage from our Apothecary garden or from local growers through the Sonoma County Herb Exchange.
Native to the Mediterranean region, Southern Europe, and parts of West Asia, Rue (also known as “Common Rue”) has a long history of use for therapeutic and spiritual purposes across many cultures. At Birdsong Apothecary, we appreciate Rue’s powerful presence for cleansing and protection, strengthening boundaries and providing spiritual courage to break unhelpful patterns and cycles.
In Mediterranean and South American folk traditions, Rue bundles are carried as protective talismans or hung in homes and vehicles for protection from negativity, hexes and the evil eye. She is also burnt as an incense or smudge, or used with other herbs in water-based rituals to purify spaces, objects or people. Astrologically, Rue is associated with the planets Saturn and Mars, reflecting her domain of boundaries, discipline, and energy. Elementally, she corresponds to Earth and Fire, signifying her grounding yet stimulating properties.
Yarrow is a plant for all - beloved by humans and pollinators, beautiful in the landscape, widely available, offering a host of therapeutic benefits for body and spirit. At the physical level, Yarrow herb belongs in the First Aid kit due to her powerful actions as a styptic and wound healer. Internally, she helps to reduce fevers, inflammation, provide digestive, respiratory and circulatory support and to regulate menstrual cycles and heavy bleeding.
Energetically, Yarrow is associated with healing, courage, divination, cleansing and protection. She helps to mend emotional wounds, process grief and support trauma recovery. She teaches us about how to hold healthy boundaries while staying open to healing connections, bringing a “Yes, and…” quality to boundary and protection work. Yarrow helps to enhance psychic awareness and intuition, employed in magic and witchcraft (European medieval and folk traditions). Dried yarrow stalks were used in the traditional method of consulting the I-Ching.
Ylang Ylang is a fast-growing tropical tree in the custard apple family (Annonaceae), native to India and mainland Southeast Asia, now widely cultivated in tropical regions around the world for its essential oil. Also known as “poor man’s Jasmine”, Ylang Ylang oil is employed for its calming and relaxing effects, and to help soothe feelings of anger and frustration,. Its heady and floral fragrance is both uplifting and grounding, associated with the heart and sacral chakras and the themes of compassion, creativity, pleasure and authentic self-expression. A deeply rich fragrance, the oil helps to clear stagnant energy from auras and physical spaces, promoting freshness and renewal.
The flowers of the Elder plant (Sambucus spp.), have been a staple of skin care formulations in its native Europe for centuries, often being the most common use of the plant (vs the berries which we revere today for immune support). Elderflowers contain flavonoids, phenolic acids, and Vitamin C, which can help soothe and improve the appearance of sun and environmentally-stressed skin. Its natural mucilage contribute to its emollient qualities, supporting skin hydration. At Birdsong Apothecary, we infuse spring-harvested Elder flowers from the Apothecary garden in sweet Almond oil to enhance the potency of our formulas, because everyone deserves beautiful skin.
Native to West Africa, the Shea tree offers its renowned “butter” from the large, oil-rich seeds of its fruit. The seeds are dried, roasted and ground into a fine powder which is then mixed with water and kneaded to separate the fat. Finally, this mixture is boiled, allowing the fat to rise to the surface where it is collected and solidified into shea butter at room temperature. Shea butter contains five different types of fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and arachidic), which account for its wide-ranging benefits for the skin, helping to moisturize and support the skin’s moisture barrier along with the benefits gained from antioxidants such as Vitamin A and E. Beyond its cosmetic benefits, shea butter is also commonly used in Africa as a cooking oil, waterproofing wax, in hairdressing, candle-making and percussion instruments. When selecting shea butter for cosmetic uses it is best to use the raw or unrefined versions to reap its benefits as higher levels of processing can affect the amount of vitamins remaining in the finished product.
Sustainably distilled from the leaves of the aromatic Rosewood tree native to the Amazon, this essential oil is a testament to the power of human collaboration and determination when working together to preserve a beloved member of the Amazon. Aniba rosaeodora can grow to almost 100 feet tall with a diameter of 6 to 7 feet. Referred to as the “ivory of the forest”, Rosewood is the most trafficked form of flora/fauna worldwide, beloved by perfumers for its smooth, rosy fragrance, and by the trades for its high-value utility in all forms of furniture, cutlery and instruments. Where previously these giants of the forest were cut down for their aromatic wood, recent projects dedicated to the preservation of this tree have discovered that the distillation of the leaves from younger, cultivated trees produce essential oils comparable to the ones extracted from the wood of older trees, allowing us to continue enjoying the aromatics of this Amazonian giant while supporting reforestation and sustainability projects in its native region.
Helichrysum italicum (also known as Immortelle, Everlasting or Curry plant) is prized in natural skincare for its regenerative, soothing, and protective properties. Helichrysum has a rich spectrum of compounds that are only just being discovered for its numerous benefits for the skin. In particular, the essential oil of Helichrysum has a high percentage of beta-diketones, important constituents which address a multitude of skin care benefits including skin repair, scar reduction, improving elasticity and reducing inflammation, among others.
A tropical grass native to Sri Lanka and India with fragrant roots that have a long history of use for its aroma. It is said that the oldest aromatic use of this plant is to weave its roots into mats, then dampened and hung up as curtains to cool and scent the air with its pleasant aroma. The essential oil of the roots also has a long history of use and is renowned as the Oil of Tranquility.
Harvested from the Apothecary garden, young Redwood tips bring the fresh green energy of Spring to this meditative blend. Steadfast stewards of coastal Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, these green giants provide habitat for wildlife and conserve moisture for vibrant forests. Medicinally, indigenous communities used a heated poultice of the leaves to treat earaches and the gummy sap used as a stimulant and tonic to support convalescence. Beyond the utility of its wood for modern construction, the fibrous bark was harvested for insulation purposes and also for making paper.
