Rue (Ruta graveolens)

Native to the Mediterranean region, Southern Europe, and parts of West Asia, Rue (also known as “Common Rue”) has a long history of use for therapeutic and spiritual purposes across many cultures. At Birdsong Apothecary, we appreciate Rue’s powerful presence for cleansing and protection, strengthening boundaries and providing spiritual courage to break unhelpful patterns and cycles. In Mediterranean and South American folk traditions, Rue bundles are carried as protective talismans or hung in homes and vehicles for protection from negativity, hexes and the evil eye. She is also burnt as an incense or smudge, or used with other herbs in water-based rituals to purify spaces, objects or people. Astrologically, Rue is associated with the planets Saturn and Mars, reflecting her domain of boundaries, discipline, and energy. Elementally, she corresponds to Earth and Fire, signifying her grounding yet stimulating properties.
